What is Involved?

Foster carers provide temporary homes to children. There are many types of foster care options available to meet a child's unique needs.

Emergency care provides immediate safety
Short-term care is for up to 6 months
Respite care offers a break to the primary foster family
Pre-adoptive care is available for babies
Long-term care is for children unlikely to return home
Day care provides flexible support during the day
Sibling placement supports family preservation

What are the Requirements?

You have a love and respect for children
You can provide a stable, nurturing and loving environment for children
You can demonstrate flexibility, openness and patience
You are over 25 years of age
You do not have a Garda record for violence, offences against children or other serious offences
You are willing to attend training courses to support your ongoing learning and skills base

Anyone anyone can enquire about becoming a foster carer. The most important thing is that you can offer stability and support to a child or young person who needs it.
